Heavy Snowfall on the OBX and a New President Today!
Today we welcome our new President, Barack Obama. Congratulations America! Washington DC, though cold welcomed the new President with sunny skies and no adverse weather. Travel south and east of DC however, and Old Man Winter's white stuff falls in blizzard-like strength!Here on the OBX it's full on blizzard snow fall out there today. Gale force N winds are blowing snow all over the place, and I am sure there is some drifting out on the beaches. We do not have snow plows or salt trucks on the OBX, therefore, drivers on the bypass are at the mercy of the inexperienced person in the vehicle ahead, behind, or beside them. Recommendation number one...if driving from Kitty Hawk to Nags Head, take the Beach Road!
My post quantity has been lacking lately due to well, cold weather and conditions below the "100 Rule" threshold. Though Andy has been hitting it with his cold weather gear and determination! He definitely has to remain primed for his visit to Maui coming up in March! Lucky dog!! : ) I however, will be reserved to swim laps at the YMCA and catch bike rides in and around Nags Head Woods to prime me for the upcoming Spring season.
Though perhaps an upcoming post will report sledding conditions at Jockey's Ridge?!

True, and I am especially looking forward to Hatteras' world class wavesailing's return, Sept 2009!
Though, we will get some action definitely before then...only cooler water.
Yeah, those roads were a bit crazy yesterday afternoon- Cars all over the freaking place!!
Man, the sailing's been great! We've gotta get you to forget about that silly 100 degree rule... Seriously, the suits, hoods, boots, and gloves of today are virtually unnoticeable, except for the fact that you're toasty warm inside them... Come join me out there!!

Are you saying that the best time for waves in OBX is September? How is April?
Yea, Andy too is trying to sell me to lower the "100 Rule" for the OBX; however, it simply seems wrong when we have that 70+ degree Gulf Stream water just offshore! Though, as of today, the coastal waters are not even close to 70 degrees, even on the south side.
April is not bad, but if I was banking on OBX waves, Sept is in the heart of tropical season, and usually provides the best long period surf. Long period is key to produce those picture perfect set waves experienced here during that time of year. Plus of course, the ocean is much warmer in Sept providing trunks to spring suit comfort if you go for a spin in the rinse cycle.
Actually, for intermediate to beginner level wavesailors, late May and June are great months to provide comfortable yet clean surf.
I guess, everyone is anxious to beat the winter blues and travel down here from up north in April to windsurf. Also, northern/Canadian home turf spots become comfortably sailable during late spring/early summer. However, Hatteras conditions really shine, especially for surf sailors who seek side-off conditions.
Best bet. Come in April to shake the winter blues, but also come down in late May/June for some primo east coast side-off wavesailing. Then if you have any vacation time left, come back in Sept for the big game action as the tropics fire.
