April was Warm and WINDY!
What a windsurfing month for 2011! April simply rocked with summer-like warmth, strong SSW winds, and ocean temps graduating at and above the 50 degree range! I actually sailed one day in trunks and a 2 mil top in Nags Head at Enterprise!
It was also great to see so many visitors join us in the surf! The hot spot is Ramp 30 located along Rt 12 about halfway between Salvo and Avon. The outside sand bar there is well formed and provides a great wave setup for the predominant SSW winds.
April really fired last week with warm windy SSW nearly every day starting over Easter weekend. Those here to windsurf scored some major time on the water both in the sound and surf! I caught a few days of it mid-week as I was out of town over last weekend, but the traffic on the OBX Beach Life Forum told the story of FUN sessions in the surf! To top it off, two celebrity pro windsurfers (Tyson Poor and Wyatt Miller) were here last week and scored a major jump sesh at Ramp 30 last Thursday. I missed that sesh as I caught it in Nags Head, but Andy at Wind-NC reported "30 ft backloops landed dry" out in the sub-4.0m conditions! Sweet!!
We are now into May which is also traditionally an excellent month for Hatteras windsurfing. If you are coming down, or are here now, definitely stay tuned to the OBX Beach Life Forum for where/when the sessions are happening, and get out there and have FUN!
In American Windsurfing Tour News, the Santa Cruz Classic starts this week! Stay tuned to upcoming video reports and commentary coming out of Stop 1 for the 2011 national wavesailing event! Below is a new "intro" video clip which may be coming for the upcoming report vids!
