AWT Hatteras Wave Jam 2011 CANCELLED

Press release from the American Windsurfing Tour:

We at the AWT are sorry to announce that this year's Hatteras Wave Jam has been cancelled. With the massive amounts of damage sustained to the local area, we decided it would be best to call off the contest. Washed out roads and flood damage have made it next to impossible for us to run an event.

We are extremely disappointed to announce this decision, but when considering the amount of damage, we feel it is the right thing to do. The AWT wants to thank everyone for their support, and interest in this event.

For all those that have registered and paid their entrance fee to compete, we will contact you about compensation.

Thanks and Aloha,

The AWT

Its a real bummer we had to cancel this event as it was primed to be the greatest concentration of top level wavesailing talent ever to hit the US East Coast.  Ironically (for better or for worse), the tropical forecast looks quite active during the event window, and though no one wants to see another storm out there, if this was a different year (no Irene experience/aftermath), we would be quite excited about epic conditions which may be in store.

Well, perhaps we will see the AWT here next year?!

Hey Bill, I'm very sorry to see that all that time and effort that everyone has invested will be literally washed away by Irene. Well, guess we need to take it in context, and there are more important things than windsurfing at times like this.

that being said........i will be on call to make the trip should conditions merit. Sorry, couldn't help myself..

In all seriousness, Janis and I are praying for quick healing down there.

Bill, I'm so sorry because I know you put a lot into the Hatteras Wave Jam. I feel so sick over the economic impact Irene is having on Hatteras Island in general, much less the economic impact of not having all the competitors and spectators there, no magazine coverage, etc.

I know evacuated locals aren't even being let on the island right now, much less folks who just want to go there to help out. I'm wondering how we can help from the outside? Is there any information on how we, as a windsurfing community and a love for the Outer Banks, can help? Donations that can be made to any specific organization that will go directly to those in need on Hatteras Island?

I'm always most excited about sailing with the obx locals. Hopefully we'll be doing that again soon.

So sorry Billy to hear that the Hatteras Wave Jam is cancelled! I know how hard you worked on this, but I guess it's for the best that it was cancelled, and since there's another storm brewing!!
