Memorial Day Weekend and ORV Closure Map

Its Memorial Day weekend and the kickoff of the OBX summer season! As seen on the live Nags Head beach cam, there are a number of people out on the sand enjoying perfect weather on the OBX. For the windsurfing scene, the gear looks to remain dry over the weekend with no sailable wind forecast and a flat ocean. Though, if you can squeeze an extra day away from work, Tuesday looks to be the day to watch!

In ORV Beach Closure news, I have received a few emails from blog readers noting a new feature offered by the National Park Service (NPS). Its a Goggle Earth integrated mapping plugin which displays, in specific detail, all closure areas on the OBX. The plugin is updated near daily, and if you have Google Earth installed locally on your computer, you can simply download the daily plugin, which loads Google Earth and automatically zooms to the OBX to show the latest closure areas. I checked it as of May 22, and in reality, the closure areas are not too bad, in reference to OBX wavesailing. Most all of the areas we normally sail remain fully accessible, except for the Cove. However, there appears to be an area where we could hike gear south of the campground and through a "walking access" area to get into the water.

Also, if you have Google Earth installed, another cool feature is the integrated Flight Simulator. Check this out and try flying around the OBX, or you local home town!

In Local OBX Windsurfing Shop News, Avon Sailhouse is hosting a little gathering tonight. If you are in town for Memorial Day weekend, stop by and check it out!
