RedBull Storm Chase Elevated Alert for Hatteras!

UPDATE:  Just received email that the RBSC will NOT be coming to Hatteras or US East Coast for Sandy.  Their logistics manager called off the Chase for the US east coast due to timing concerns with getting everyone to Avon before Pea Island potentially washes out.  Bummer! Will have to keep watch for the next Fall Hatteras storm?!

TS/H Sandy is heading our way and the forecast is ripe for big wind and surf beginning this coming weekend and lasting though most of next week!  The RedBull Storm Chase has Hatteras as an Alert Destination, and we are now "elevated," likely to see the RBSC crew coming in to catch classic Hatteras fall storm conditions?!

Wind-NC Andy and I have been in direct contact with RBSC organizers and those guys are getting ready to pull the trigger for the first storm chase!
Stay tuned!

Who is the sailor in the picture there? Awesome picture. Is there a story around that picture?

That pic was shot during the brush by of H Noel back in 2007 at Izzys. H Noel had a similar track to what we will see for Sandy this coming weekend.

The sailor..., that is me! Interestingly, I was not even going to go out that day as it was pretty intense with 50 mph near straight offshore N wind and big surf! However, I was egged to go out, and so I did. Made one run out, caught a few huge jumps (luckily captured in this pic), and brought it back into the beach where I kissed the sand! Ironically, the sketchiest part was the outside rather than the wave zone! I was on a 3.7m sail, way overpowered, and a 75 ltr board. Outside, it was very difficult to simply maintain controlled sailing and with straight offshore wind, a breakdown would have been deadly.

Survived it though, a photographer on the beach caught the pic, and glad she did!

Another interesting piece from that sesh was that only two of us were out on the water at that time. Dimitri M of Epic Kites and myself. Dimitri was on a 4.0m kite, and I was on a 3.7m windsurfing sail. Likely one of the closest kite vs. sail size experiences on the water! :)

Cool story. That takes some big cojones. By the way...Red Bull is saying that they're not coming to Hatteras because of the logistics of Pea Island getting cut off. So if that really happens, then why can't they have the Storm Chase at a break North of Pea Island, like at Oregon Inlet or the Washout, or even Coquina Beach for that matter?? Is it that it is much better to be in Avon and South? Just curios.
