More on the Thanksgiving Storm of 2006

Thanksgiving is over and I ate enough food to last quite a while. I actually vacated the OBX for the long Thanksgiving weekend to visit my wife's family in Northern Virginia. Lauren and I were on the road Thursday morning, and from reports noted by Charlie, Caleb, and Keith, there were a few additional windy days after the Thanksgiving Storm of 2006 vacated the area.

Thursday, skies were gray but the winds were up from the NW. The Oregon Inlet bridge remained closed into Thanksgiving day but later opened allowing traffic to flow. I am not sure if any of the local crew sailed on Thursday since everyone was still cleaning up from the storm, but I am sure someone was on the water somewhere on the OBX. Friday, NW winds were up again. Josh S. and crew from Windsurfing Mag joined the local crew for some action at Salvo Ramp. Head high waves and light inside conditions reported. Sorry I missed it! Here is an excerpt from Keith's report from that day:

Sailed today for 1.5 hours at ramp 23 with the crew. NNW 5.3m, big board, head high, no wind on the inside. planing on the outside. pretty clean wave, sunny, tough arm workout on the inside. Windsurfing Magazine guys were there taking photos. water cooled down probably right around 60 or 58. got one or two hits that made it worthwhile. - Keith McCulloch

Below are some photos from Big Tuesday (11/21/2006), before the brunt of the Thanksgiving Storm. Conditions: NE 40+ knots, side-off, and slightly overhead clean surf! Looked much better than the shots from Nags Head! photographer: Jim Myers
