This week's poll notes the Oregon Inlet Bridge rebuild issue. The Oregon Inlet (Herbert C. Bonner) Bridge spans Oregon Inlet and is the only roadway access to Hatteras Island. Most everyone who travels to Hatteras crosses this bridge and enjoys the scenic area surrounding the inlet. There has been much debate on the OBX regarding the bridge, its safety, and options for rebuilding it. Check out the Replace the Bridge Now for details.

The bridge is rated 4 out of a possible 100? That is insane!
I have joined the bridge replacement website, and will spread the word to my fellow OBXphiles.
Yea, I had a housemate before getting married that was an NC underwater bridge inspector and frequently inspected the bridge. He noted that the pilings are all but exposed with no sand supporting the foundations due to the strong currents and years of exposure. Also, the underside of the bridge is missing large chunks of concrete that has broken off and fallen into the inlet.
Every time I drive across, I keep a keen eye ahead for missing roadway, especially during heavy winds or traffic?!
