As Usual, Labor Day Weekend Wind Fest!

Every year, Labor Day weekend is windy! This year was no different, with sailable conditions during the late afternoon on Saturday, and all day Sunday. Both days experienced strong NE blows in the 25+ mph range. Today, I am quite sore after four straight hours yesterday at the Point in Buxton. Dan and I were the first on the water around noon. Winds were holding in the mid 20s and we actually expected it to drop though the afternoon; however, that did not happen! We finished up after 4:00pm due to exhaustion rather than lack of wind. I had two short breaks during the session. 1) to call and let everyone know where we were and report conditions, and 2) to fix a broken footstrap screw. Luckily, I had a backup!

During the afternoon, Caleb, Donnie B, Jim M, Jason, and Charles L joined Dan and I for the side onshore frolic at the Point. Conditions were waist to chest high surf breaking on the outer bar. Rig sizes ranged from 5.3m/76 ltr (myself) up to 6.7m/130 ltr (Charles L). The setup was quite nice for port side jumping, and looping, along with back side wave riding, and some down the line hits. All in all, a fun session and a nice precursor to upcoming Fall conditions!
MIA during the session was Keith M!?!

No onboard video action until I receive my GoPro package back from CA. I shipped the existing unit out for a software update and upgrade to the water housing. With the new stuff they are sending me, the onboard action should be even better!

Some additional photos from the session (photographer: Bill B):

Special Notice:
Sammy the surf dogSammy the Surf Dog at Queen of the Surf Pirates was run down by a drunk driver Friday night in Kill Devil Hills. Sammy survived, but is pretty bad shape and recovery will be long. Our deepest condolences go out to Sammy and Paula from QSP.

crappy conditions not worth driving to the beach for such flat water conditions...
you might as well start smoking crack if you're going to glorify such conditions.
Even a midget wouldn't get psyched for such small conditons. Time to get real!

In response to anonymous, There were actually alot of opportunities for back loop attempts and backside air off the lips.also, enough with the crack comments.get on the water and get better! The pics of the tourist is super cute!

anonymous,

Sounds like you likely are NOT getting too much time in the water, and spending too much time complaining about it. Also, when conditions are "not small" will you be sitting on the beach watching it, or out in the water hitting it?!

Its Hatteras dude...we take what we can get, and have fun with it.

Looks like a great time was had by all , I would have killed to have been there ripping with y'all.

Don't you hate it when the trolls aren't even mildly creative or entertaining ?

Anonymouse,

Hey little guy, crappie is relative to the observer. At the Mondial Du Vent in Lucate they would have killed to have had it so good. but this ain't France. In fact it was so good Donnie Bowers came out of retirement to join us. So quit complaining, and untangle your strings. Then maybe you could join us next time.

We know who you are anonymous,aka...EMO

At least get my name right. It's Emu. (manquer la levre) By the way Caleb which one of those tourists did you ask back to your trailer? Or did you just ask them all?

At 1:27 PM, Blogger Bill said...

Emu aka Kook! Well at least you are the only one who can legitimately complain about conditions.

Hey, you coming down this weekend? The forecast is looking like there is not too much to "complain" about?!

ha-ha -ha...i knew it was you emo and i did get your name right everyone here knows you as emo,i think charlie named you that after emo philips or was it because you love emo music?.can anyone clear this up for us? where did emo get his name?

My favorite is Eric's nickname for Emo, which is "Gizmo!"

Caleb is just jealous because he's the number three kook on Hatteras Island.

Bill, it looks like s#!t. Dano even said it sucked. Stop ganging up on Emo because he calls it like it is. The guy rules no matter how much time on the water he gets. Don't you remember Thanksgiving last year?

This weekend looks good. Hopefully we will get to see some good Hatteras conditions instead of epic n end conditions. It's why we all live here.

Ah, this day (50 mph near straight offshore):
http://obxbeachlife.blogspot.com/2006_11_27_archive.html

Yea, but I also remember this day:
http://obxbeachlife.blogspot.com/2007/06/ts-barry-equals-waves.html
(25+ mph side to side off)
When both you guys sat on the beach and would not go out, though Emo mentioned "injury risk?!"

Regardless of the day, the main thing is that it is best to get out and go sailing, rather than saying it "sucks" all the time. If the Hatteras windsurfing world revolved around "epic" days like Thanksgiving 2006 (which was debatable anyway), you would only get out once a year.

Though, I do take the complaints from Emo with a "grain of salt," since he probably would have had a fun time just to be on the water this past Sunday; if not, then why windsurf? But really it is pretty dumb to blow off a windy day with ocean action if the reason is "it sucked," when not even experiencing it.

If you get "picky" here in Hatteras, your calendar will have more "Complained About It" marks in the calendar than actual sailing days, and that's no fun.

But... hey its all good! : )

No one will be sitting on the beach this coming weekend, right?

Perhaps washing in the whitewater after getting denied, but that's better than sitting on the beach!

That's what I love about this blog. The comments are funnier than the reports. I totally forgot about the Lauren slapping Bill bit. If Caleb is the number three Kook whos's number two? Hoping to catch some good conditions this weekend.

WTF????

FYI, i usually log-in under my name when posting crap against eventless session blogs!
Hence, not me, not sure what you're talking about, but you all have definitely too much time on your hands as seen in all these posts.

Whatever...

Might make it this wknd, just get out of my way, i forgot how to windsurf and i'm not sharing waves!

quality vs quantity are my last word on this blog, after reading the crap you all wrote.
Manque la levre, je t'emmerde aussi...

not enough time on water, try 10/11 days in Baja, probably rode more waves than you did in past two years. Plus, why would i want to drive 10hrs for crap, would you?
Last time i checked the nightlife and ladies in DC were in town, have yet to see the same on OBX.... Even in Calob's trailer.

just get your crap together this winter and meet us in baja for 3 weeks of hardcore windsurfing, we'll see who goes out everyday and those who talk more than ride....

Anyway, lets drink tequilla, smoke the peace pipe and butcher all kiters on the water saturday sunday, cause, the string monkeys will be there and it is open season since last week !

Bill, I remember TS Barry. I couldn't bring myself to sail in the crappy conditions. If I recall, you made an uncountable number of trips carrying gear back up the beach and Caleb went downwind about a mile to the inlet, probably tweaking his "back loops" out of site of the crowd. I don't consider myself a legend and I'm definitely not one of the guys who are talking their lips off about how they were ripping the conditions to shreds. I'm usually not interested in internet blogging nonsense but I had to jump in and defend Emo.

I guess everyone had their own definition of good conditions.

Hey, let all have fun this weekend!

I will even load my cooler with some PBRs so we do not have to drink all Danosaur's busch lites.

Hey I brought a 12 pack of Ying-A-Lings to the beach. After hearing how good it was I figured I better drink a few before heading out on my 6.7. If you see the bucket next to the truck feel free to grab one, Kookaloop too. Don't worry about taking the last one either. I usually hide one in the glovebox for emergencies.

Dont you think its sad that not one of us can land a back loop or a push loop and even our best forwards dont compare,we dont even land air off the lips that much.maybe more time on the water(regardless of conditions) and less time driving around drinkn beer and complaining.Ive heard you say and i quote"me and emo are the only ones going for it" truth is hatteras wave sailors dont even register on the go for it scale
