ORV/Pedestrian Beach Closures Officially Begin

The National Park Service (NPS) has released information regarding the start of beach closures this week. Bodie Island spit (Oregon Inlet), Cape Point, and south Ocracoke have been closed as of noon yesterday. Wavesailing Spit/Cove sessions are now a thing of the past...

Do you know if we are breaking the perimeter boundaries if we just sail to the cove and never touch land? They've also discussed a small corridor ABOVE the high tide line that'll remain open to foot traffic.

Regardless, we should be very careful to respect the new rules, as any infractions will just increase the perimeter...

I believe as long as you do not come into the beach you are ok, but the problem is finding a place to launch to get to the Cove. From the accessible east side, there will be heavy concentrations of fisherman where allowed beach access will continue to exist. Usually, they do not like windsurfers tangling in their fishing lines. From the south, there is no access except a long sail from near the Frisco Pier since the access near Billy Mitchell airfield is closed.

Usually sailing in the Cove requires a launch at the Cove given wind/surf conditions. Plus, the risk of equipment failure would mean trouble if you are "stranded" with no place to come ashore. Though, the NPS would hopefully not arrest you if the situation was "life threatening."

Bill,

From what I read the ramp at billy mitchell is still open and you can drive north to the place that we always called the Cove. For some reason in the past two years people have insisted on incorrectly calling the Point the Cove. I think Andy is correct about the high tide corridor allowing foot traffic. The fisherman are already talking about launching kayaks from the Ramp 44 access to paddle around the beach closure, which is there because the beach is too narrow for ORV passage, to get to the "wet sands below the high tide line to fish" so I don't see why we couldn't sail around the closure as long as we land on sand that is not inside the closure area we should be fine

I believe the ramp (49) at Billy Mitchell was closed earlier. According to the Island Free Press article I saw this quote:
"At Cape Point, Park Service rangers told fishermen mid-afternoon that they had to leave the area, and then signs were erected closing the beach just west of Ramp 44, effectively closing off access to what is probably the most famous area for surf fishing on the East Coast. Access to the Point from the west, from Ramp 49 in Frisco, is already closed."

Therefore we cannot access the Cove from the west.
