Poll Results and New Poll Question

Poll Results:
Which town/area do you primarily stay in when visiting the OBX?
Avon: 15 votes (41%)

Rodanthe/ Waves: 7 votes (19%)
Nags Head/ KDH/ Kitty Hawk: 5 votes (14%)

Honorable Mention: Other - "They all want to stay at my house"

Looks like the majority enjoys OBX beach life in Avon. Great choice! Though I am surprised there were not any votes for Hatteras Village (0 votes) since that area has seen a lot of growth over the past few years for the visiting vacationer.

Waves from a recent storm damage a Nags Head home - source: Town of Nags HeadThis week's poll asks your opinion on "beach nourishment." For those who do not know what the phrase means, it refers to replacing lost beach with sand from other locations. Primarily on the OBX the replacement sand is dredged from nearby inlets or the open ocean bed. It is a hot topic, especially in Nags Head, due to high costs of the project, environmental impact, maintainability, and long term effects. There will be a public vote on the issue this coming week.

From my perspective/observations, one positive result of "beach nourishment" is better sandbars offshore in Nags Head. The sand loaded onto the beach usually washes out; however, it settles just offshore to form nice surf breaks. I have experienced excellent surfing conditions over the past two years in Nags Head since they have been piloting this program. Though from an environmental and fiscal perspective, there are drawbacks.

Bill,
You are opening up a can of worms on this one. The cost of not adding to the beach will be much greater than doing nothing. I don't think there are any additional information sessions planned - the vote is on Tuesday.

I agree, this one is a hot topic and perfect poll fodder.
Whether a local resident or vacationer visiting the affected areas, it will be interesting to see how it pans out. Though, as I mentioned in the post, the local sand bars have been improved be the effort. Therefore from a surfing perspective, it improves the lineup.

Lets just hope that if this does not work, they do not decide to install jetties.
